Statewide Continuous Quality
Improvement Project in Pain Management
Contact: Debra DeSilva, Brown University Center for
Gerontology and Health Care Research
- Conduct a statewide quality
improvement program for pain management at the
end-of-life in nursing homes. Participating nursing homes will work together to
achieve rapid improvement during a 15-month period of time.
- Conduct an audit of the quality of
care of dying in their facility using data
collection resources such as the MDS and small scale new data collection instruments.
- Work with nursing homes to conduct
several quality improvement efforts to enhance
the quality of care of the dying. One on one consultants with nursing experience in
quality indicators and pain management will be provided for each nursing home.
- Offer an educational curriculum
(free of charge) to nursing home facilities in the State for quality improvement in pain management for dying persons in long term
care facilities. Our goal is to provide at least 30 Rhode Island long term care
facilities with the knowledge, skills, and tools to improve the quality of pain management
for dying persons through educational outreach. There will be 2-hour sessions held
every 10-12 weeks. The first hour of every session will be a didactic curriculum and
the second hour will involve small group workshops, for applying the knowledge discussed
to the institutions' own QI effort. Facilities will have the opportunity to share
best practices, concerns and information on pain management with their peers.
- Schedule nationally known experts as
guest speakers at many of the sessions,
offering the most up-to-date information in the field.
